Micro-Library

Fall Quarter | '21 | Ana Ozaki Studio

The project is to create a micro-library on top of an already existing building that can serve the purpose to create a space in which both individuals and groups alike have a space to become intimate with and have the ability to study, learn, socialize, and enjoy. The site was the corner lot on Morro St. and Monterey St. in downtown San Luis Obispo.

Wooden Model Image 1

After creating diagrams of the site, (Public vs. Private, Inside vs. Outside, Noisy vs. Quiet, Rough vs. Smooth, Fast vs. Slow) they are turned into sketch models, overtime becoming combinations of one another. These sketch model eventually escalate until a grand hybrid model is created. The final model is eventually turned into a final wooden model (in this case MDF board).

The model created before wood had a purpose to contain the hybrid of all the diagrams, but also to be a space that an individual can walk around and explore. The wooden model is then used to inspire the final build. The model is combined with the matrix series (next slide) to contain concepts from the diagrams, and the built environment around it.

Project Development and Placement

Matrix Series (top) aids the development of the structure through concepts from the city such as sunlight, circulation patters, and views and mix them with the model. The isometric drawings display in context with downtown San Luis Obispo (located near entertainment centers, restaurants, and bars.)

Emphasizing Interior and Exterior Detail

4 section views are split between the horizontal and vertical of the building. Here, the slide is obvious in section C showing the possible circulation from top to bottom.

Rendered Exhibitions

A detailed viewing to see how the books are placed into the library and where. To see where each individual study space occurs (2nd image, 2nd row), and group worktables nearing nooks and crannies.

Interaction Within the Area

Group perspective is to show where multiple people can come in and study together, work on projects, or just to hang out in the area and enjoy the natural light and the views. The individual perspective is to display where someone wanting to focus alone can study, desks angled a specific direction to avoid direct glare.

Detail Within

Further Analysis

Viewing from both Morro St. and Monterey St. (the streets the site is cornered on). The plans on the right emphasize each area, and which features make it through each floor, such as the slide, stairs, and specific walls.
